The act of gambling for money is a very common activity, particularly among teenagers. Teenagers are often drawn to the promise of instant gratification and the chance to win big. They may also gamble in hopes of paying off debts. Some teenagers may even sell possessions to pay for their gambling debts.
Losing money at gambling can lead to financial anxiety and depression. It may also lead a teenager to steal in hopes of paying off debts.
A study by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found that college-aged males had a heightened interest in online gambling in 2010. College-aged males had an annual increase of 16.0% in their use of online gambling sites. Despite this increase, the frequency of use remained at 3% per week.
A study conducted by the University of Michigan School of Information found that the most common form of online gambling is sports betting. Sports betting was the most common form of gambling for high school-aged females, with 18.9% using the internet to place bets in 2008. In 2010, the percentage of females using the Internet to place bets increased to 28.2%, largely due to the availability of online venues.
